BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER… LET ME TELL YOU HOW I GOT STARTED

During what I call my “self-discovery year” in 2014, I struggled with my identity, 

had the opportunity to really dive into my passion for nutrition. I read up on different diets, read a lot of nutrition blogs and cooked up a storm. There are so many opinions on what we should and shouldn’t eat, it’s quite overwhelming. I can see how one can become frustrated and confused.

There were a few bloggers I followed who turned vegan and provided some great resources on why one shouldn’t eat animal products. I was intrigued. I began to read books and decided to adopt a vegan lifestyle for a few weeks. Despite feeling energized from increasing my vegetable intake, I lost weight and didn’t feel my best.

After a few weeks, I reverted back to eating meat sporadically while making sure I eliminate processed foods, refined sugar and junk food. My obsession with eating healthy got a little out of control. I read the ingredient list for every item I bought, I would feel guilty for eating something “unhealthy”, I constantly wondered how certain people ate the way they did and thought it was okay, I felt more in control when I followed a diet and I rejected food offered to me that wasn’t “healthy”. I was on my way to developing orthorexia nervosa.

To be honest, this is not the way I wanted to live my life. I didn’t want my life to revolve around food. I wanted to find a balance. I wanted to eat to fuel my body so I could feel my best and achieve my goals. If I wanted to eat a piece of chocolate cake, I would allow myself to enjoy every bite. I wanted to be in tune with my body and fuel it with what it wants and needs. That is why I stopped following a specific diet and started to eat what’s right for me and my lifestyle.
