8 things you need to know when building your dreams

{Repost from March 2015} As you might have read in my previous post,  I attended the Wellness Business Summit in Toronto to learn more about starting a business in the wellness industry, finding my purpose and living a life full of abundance and financial freedom. It was the most inspiring and motivating event I've ever attended. I was amongst 300+ health practitioners and aspiring wellness business owners ready to learn, network and thrive.

The entire experience exceeded my expectations. The few days leading up to the conference, I was excited to take a few days away from home, settle into a hotel and learn from those who've started where I am today. Some of the WBS '15 expert presenters included:

  • Meghan Walker N.D. - Taught us how to align our practice model to our lifestyle, financial and social impact goals
  • Sean Francis D.C. - Taught us the Facebook formula for growing our client list
  • Stephanie Joanne - She is the brand building genius and fitness rockstar!
  • Stephanie Packer RHN- Taught us how to build a global wellness business with direct sales
  • Igor Klibanov - Taught us how to run public speaking events and find the right groups of people we should be speaking to
  • Marni Wasserman - Taught us how to start before we are ready and why it's our only option
  • And the boss lady/event producer/event creator/INSPIRING superwoman Lori Kennedy RHN - Taught us how to create a business plan, create a dream business and life we've always wanted for ourselves

Now this is just the tip of the iceberg and I could probably write a whole novel about what I've learned, but instead I will leave you with 8 things you need to know when building your dreams/starting your own business:

1. Define your purpose and revisit it as often as you need

What do you want to live for? Who do you want to live for? What is your mission? Dig deep and find the true purpose behind your business/dream. Do you want to help people fight cancer and provide their families with support? Do you want to help entrepreneurs find their strengths and provide resources to help them build their dreams? When you fulfill a deeper purpose, the money will come and you will feel satisfied. If your sole purpose is to make money, you are likely to hit a road block along the way trying to find reason behind everything that you do. You work will not come across as genuine and you won't be successful.

And if you ever feel like quitting, revisit your purpose. It's a powerful foundation you need to succeed.

2. Don't be afraid to talk about money

If your dream involves starting a business, you need to know how much money you need to start your business, how much money you need to make to sustain it and create a life for yourself. If you don't talk about money, how do you expect to make money and live a life of financial freedom.

3. Weed out negative people out of your life

Negative people will bring you down, doubt and question your every move. Surround yourself with positive people who will challenge you, support you and inspire you. Don't expect everyone to have your back or support your idea. The point is not to have everyone like your idea, but to create a supporting community that will benefit from your dream/business. When you realize your dreams, you will be beaming with life and you will inspire those around you.

4. Build your team which includes supportive, positive and inspiring individuals

You want to create a team with people you can trust. People who will coach you, provide strategies and be your cheerleader. Choose wisely.

5. Map out your vision

When you have created a road map towards your vision, you will have an easier time navigating through your dream. What do you want your life to look like? How do you want your business to look like? Do you want to open up a studio for handmakers or aspiring cooks? Do you want to travel and help people around the world?

6. You will fail until you succeed

Don't expect your dream to realized itself over night. You need to work hard, fail, learn from your mistakes, and try again. You need to be consistent and have passion. How do you expect to succeed without failing? And who knows, your failure might lead you to something bigger and greater - a road you thought never to explore.

7. Make sure your opportunities align with your goals

When you work towards your goal, make sure every opportunity that you face is aligned with your purpose and vision. You want to make sure your opportunities challenge you personally and professionally.

8. Be confident!

Speak with confidence, believe in your dream and work hard. You can do it!
