Have you ever read the ingredients at the back of a peanut butter or jam jar of a leading brand? Do you only read the front label and fall for the key words like "less sugar" or "made with real fruit"? Ever since I was more aware of the impact certain foods have on my body and the amount of additives in certain foods, I read ever list of ingredients. If the first ingredient is sugar or there are ingredients I cannot pronounce, I don't think twice and put it back on the shelf. If I can't recognize it, how will my body process it?
I picked up a jar of natural peanut butter and the only ingredient is peanuts. There are some people who cringe at the sight of the oil separating in a natural peanut butter but is it really an inconvenience? You simply have to stir the butter and place it in the fridge or place it upside down and the oil will rise. So next time you reach for the peanut butter, it'll be easy to spread on your toast or crackers or scoop into your smoothie.
When it comes to jams, there are a lot of brands that add sugar and other additives. Stray away from those jams and make your own. It's as simple as mashing up strawberries, raspberries or blueberries in a bowl and spreading it over peanut butter. It's affordable and a healthier alternative.
