The Benefits of Gratitude
One of the self-care actions for my Self-Care Challengethis month,is writing a thank you note. Giving thanks (or being on the receiving end) "both exemplify the positive in human behaviour and provide us with a positive charge that boosts our emotional balance" (Psychology Today).
"Psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough point out that gratitude is the "forgotten factor" in happiness research. They point out the benefits of expressing gratitude as ranging from better physical health to improved mental alertness. People who express gratitude also are more likely to offer emotional support to others.
Expressing gratitude in your daily life might even have a protective effect on staving off certain forms of psychological disorders. In a review article, researchers found that habitually focusing on and appreciating the positive aspects of life is related to a generally higher level of psychological well-being and a lower risk of certain forms of psychopathology" (Psychology Today, Giving Thanks: The Benefits of Gratitude).
This year has been a challenging one for me and instead of dwelling on the heartbreak and obstacles in my life, I decided to invest in my health and take part in Barreworks Summer Fit and Barre Crawl challenge. Exercising 3-5 times a week has left me confident, physically and mentally strong and motivated to take on any challenge that comes my way. Barreworks creates a supportive and welcoming environment and it honestly made a huge impact in my life this year. Here is my letter to the Barreworks team:
Dear Barreworks team,
This message is long overdue but I wanted to say thank you for providing me with your support, great workouts and fun challenges this year. If you ask any of my friends or family, they would tell you that I was quite athletic and active when I was younger, but things went downhill once university started. Since it was no longer mandatory, I barely exercised and I had no motivation to keep it up. I always made excuses and with my slim figure, I didn’t find the need to. I was always told “you’re so lucky you are so slim, you don’t need to exercise”. I soon found out that wasn’t the case.
This year has been a challenging one for me but Barreworks has kept me busy, motivated, confident and strong, physically and mentally. After completing the summer fit challenge, I was hooked on the classes and looked forward to attending every class (even those at 9 a.m.). I now understand the importance of exercise and it is one of the best investments I made.
Barreworks is the fitness buddy you never want to cancel on and is always committed to making you feel great. Thank you again for a great year!
Give thanks to someone who's helped you, made your life easier, challenged you or simply was there for you when you needed them most.
