I don’t know about you but I often hear people ask: Are you happy? I’ve seen a trend on Facebook and Instagram where people post happiness quotes or Five ways to lead a happier life article. I will admit it, I like those Instagram photos, sometimes #regram them and read those articles. We are constantly seeking a happier life, which don’t get me wrong is not a bad thing but I think we might be losing sight of what truly makes us happy. We think that simply reading and following those 5 ways to live a happier life will bring us more awareness and happier lives when in fact it’s much simpler than that.
A friend on Facebook posted David Steindl-Rast’s TED Talk titled Want to be happy? Be grateful. David made me realize that being happy is as simple as what we’ve been taught when crossing the street. Stop. Look and Go. We live such chaotic lives and rush through life that we miss the opportunity to feel grateful. And when you are grateful, you are happy. We are always on the go, always filling our schedules with parties, get togethers, and appointments that we fail to stop and appreciate what we have in life. We all have enough and are enough. No amounts of money will ever bring you happiness. Gratefulness comes from within, knowing that you’ve been given an opportunity without any trade off.
My favourite part of the video is when David mentions that when we are grateful, we are willing to share and enjoy the differences in others. When we realize the differences, we are respectful of them and create equal respect. So lets take 5, 10 or even 30 minutes to turn off our phones and sit in silence and really think deeply as to what we are truly grateful for today and in life. This will help you refocus and realize that you have enough and already live a happy life. Sometimes we just need to sit in silence and let our inner authentic voice speak.
Today, I am grateful for the roof over my head, the food in my belly and the family and friends I can depend on.
What are you grateful for?
